I can’t believe that tomorrow voters will have the power to make a positive change in their own communities by simply writing the numbers 1, 2, 3.
Since we kicked off the campaign in mid-February we have knocked on thousands of doors and spoke to many more voters. And the overall message you have given me is that the political parties have let you down, lied and lined their own pockets and those of their cronies and friends.
We have heard stories of unbelievable suffering and distress from families struggling to survive the worst recession in this country’s history. And instead of offering solutions the government parties simply impose more pressure on us in the form of more taxation.
The people of Rathfarnham are not looking for much from their local authority – just delivery of the most basic services. We are told the country is broke and there just isn’t any cash available to ease the suffering.
But there’s no problem finding the money to pay for consultants for Irish Water, massive severance packages for senior civil servants and TDs and six-figure salaries for Enda Kenny’s pals.
There is money there, unfortunately the party political system is so corrupt and warped, it no longer understands the value of money. But I do, because I have to manage my money – like every other household in this country – I have to make ends meet and try and feed and clothe my kids and pay a mortgage on top of all the other taxes imposed under austerity.
Unlike the government who continues to waste our money – just like previous governments. The government have told us that from next year South Dublin County Council will have your Property Tax at their disposal to spend.
So I am asking you tomorrow when you step into the polling booth in your polling station, please give me your No. 1. Let’s bring some common sense and basic budgeting knowhow to SDCC.
It’s your money – who do you want spending it?
Please remember to write 1, 2, 3 on your polling card – don’t just tick your top choices as this will mean your vote has been spoiled. You can give your first preference and leave it at that, you can give your top 1, 2, 3 or you can give each 11 candidates on the ballot paper a preference.
But if there is a candidate or party you wish to send a special message to simply give everyone else on the ballot paper a vote except them – this will cause them to be eliminated early.
Make your vote count – vote for Deirdre O’Donovan Non-party No. 1.
I’m at the bottom of the ballot.
