Grid Link Project Update: June 2014

Dear Councillor,

I hope this finds you well.

I am writing to update you on EirGrid’s Grid Link Project.

As you may be aware from media reports, on Monday last EirGrid announced an underground route for the Grid West Project, which links Mayo and Roscommon.

This follows our commitment in January of this year, as part of the Grid25 Initiatives announced to respond to key concerns that emerged in the public consultation, to examine underground options for the Grid West and Grid Link projects.

The Grid Link Project is EirGrid’s plan to upgrade the electricity transmission network linking Munster and Leinster.

We are now working to identify an underground route for the Grid Link Project and we expect to publish this later in the year, alongside an overhead corridor.

These routes, along with a detailed analysis of the two options, will then be reviewed by the Independent Expert Panel appointed by Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources Mr Pat Rabbitte TD to provide assurance to the public and to stakeholders that both underground and overhead options are being looked at in a fair, objective and comparable way.

We believe it is important that people are aware that we will be publishing this underground option later this year and so next week we will be placing the attached advertisement in local media across the south and east of the country.

In the coming weeks, we will be responding to many of the individuals and groups that made submissions to the third public consultation on the Grid Link Project which ended on January 7th.

We received more than 35,000 submissions, each of which had to be read, recorded and analysed to ensure that the information being provided could be understood and considered.

From the outset, EirGrid has been determined that each and every person that made a submission would receive an individual response and we intend to fulfil this promise.

They will also receive a copy of the attached booklet, which provides information on many of the key themes and issues that emerged during the public consultation.

If you would like more information or to contact the project team, please do so by emailing us at gridlink@eirgrid.com or phoning us on 1890 422 122.

Kind regards,
